Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Types of periodontal diseases include gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis and periodontitis are very serious infections. If this disease is left untreated it can lead to gum loss. The word periodontal means "around the tooth."

Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection. The disease affects the gums and bone that support the teeth. One tooth or many teeth can be affected by this disease. This disease begins with bacteria found in plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that is colourless and forms on the surface of the teeth. It mainly sits around the base of the teeth.

The bacteria in the plaque cause the surrounding gums to become inflamed.

Gingivitis is the mild form of Periodontal disease and Periodontitis is the more advanced form which leads to loss of teeth. Loss of teeth is due to the bones that hold the tooth in place getting destroyed by the disease. The disease eats away at the bone and gums and makes the tooth loose. It is very disgusting and we should always brush our teeth two times a day. We must brush our teeth properly which I will discuss in further detail in later posts.
